1.0 Introduction

Open source is an approach to the design, development, and distribution of software, offering practical accessibility to a software’s source code. Some consider open source as one of various possible design approaches, while others consider it a critical strategic element of their operations. Before open source became widely adopted, developers and producers used a variety of phrases to describe the concept; the term open source gained popularity with the rise of the Internet, which provided access to diverse production models, communication paths, and interactive communities.Software is a general term for the various kinds of programs used to operate computers and related devices. Hardware is the physical aspect of computer, telecommunications, and other device.

2.0 The Latest Open Source Operating System

2.1 Meaning Of Open Source OS

Open source operating system is defined as an interface between hardware and user; it is responsible for the management and coordination of activities and the sharing of the limited resources of the computer which system acts as a host for applications that are run on the machine where is an approach to the design, development, and distribution of software, offering practical accessibility to a software’s source code.

2.2 Example Of Open Source OS

An example of open source operating system is Ubuntu. Ubuntu is designed primarily for use on personal computers, although a server edition also exists. Ubuntu holds an estimated global usage of more than 12 million desktop users, making it the most popular desktop Linux distributionwith about 50% of Linux desktopmarket share. It is fourth most popular on web servers, and its popularity is increasing rapidly.

Another example of latest open source is Linux. Linux can be installed on a wide variety of computer hardware, ranging from mobile phones, tablet computers, routers and video game consoles, to desktop computers, mainframes and supercomputers.Linux is a leading server operating system, and runs the 10 fastest supercomputers in the world.

`The development of Linux is one of the most prominent examples of free and open source software collaboration; typically all the underlying source code can be used, freely modified, and redistributed, both commercially and non-commercially, by anyone under licenses such as the GNU General Public License. Typically Linux is packaged in a format known as a Linux distribution for desktop and server use. Some popular mainstream Linux distributions include Debian, Fedora and openSUSE. Linux distributions include the Linux kernel, supporting utilities and libraries and usually a large amount of application software to fulfill the distribution's intended use.

A distribution oriented toward desktop use may include the X Window System, the GNOME and KDE Plasmadesktop environments. Other distributions may include a less resource intensive desktop such as LXDE or Xfce for use on older or less-powerful computers. A distribution intended to run as a server may omit any graphical environment from the standard install and instead include other software such as the Apache HTTP Server and a SSH server like OpenSSH. Because Linux is freely redistributable, it is possible for anyone to create a distribution for any intended use. Commonly used applications with desktop Linux systems include the Mozilla Firefox web browser, the OpenOffice.org or LibreOffice office application suites, and the GIMP image editor.

3.0 The Latest Open Source Application Software

3.1 Meaning Of Open Source Application Software

Open source application software can defined as the general designation of computer programs for performing user tasks where is an approach to the design, development, and distribution of software, offering practical accessibility to a software’s source code.

3.2 Example Of Open Source Application Software

An examples of the latest application software is Mozilla Firefox. This software is a free and open sourceweb browser descended from the Mozilla Application Suite and managed by Mozilla Corporation. As of August 2011[update], Firefox is the second most widely used browser, with approximately 30% of worldwide usage share of web browsers. The browser has had particular success in Germany and Poland, where it is the most popular browser with 55% usage and 47% respectively.

To display web pages, Firefox uses the Geckolayout engine, which implements most current web standards in addition to several features that are intended to anticipate likely additions to the standards.

Features include tabbed browsing, spell checking, incremental find, live bookmarking, a download manager, private browsing, location-aware browsing based exclusively on a Google service and an integrated search system that uses Google by default in most localizations. Functions can be added through extensions, created by third-party developers,of which there is a wide selection, a feature that has attracted many of Firefox's users.

Firefox runs on various operating systems including Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, and many other platforms. Its current stable release is version 6.0.2, released on September 6, 2011[update]. Firefox's source code is tri-licensed under the GNU GPL, GNU LGPL, or Mozilla Public License.

OpenOffice.org, commonly known as OOo or OpenOffice, is an open-source application suite whose main components are for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, and databases. OpenOffice is available for a number of different computer operating systems, is distributed as free software and is written using its own GUI toolkit. It supports the ISO/IEC standard OpenDocument Format (ODF) for data interchange as its default file format, as well as Microsoft Office formats among others. As of June 2011[update], OpenOffice.org supports over 120 languages. As free software, users are free to download, modify, use and distribute OpenOffice.org. LibreOffice is a fork of OpenOffice.org which was formed by many of the original developers of Open Office.                    4.0 The Latest Development in ICT

5.0 Pervasive Computing

5.1 Meaning Of Pervasive Computing

Pervasive computing is refers to the use of computers in everyday life, including PDAs, smartphones and other mobile devices. It also refers to computers contained in commonplace objects such as cars and appliances and implies that people are unaware of their presence.

5.2 Examples of Pervasive Computing

The iPhone 5 is going to be fully equipped with amazing new features such as face recognition security, dual core processor, sleeker body design and extended battery life. Here the special characteristics of iPhone 5.

1. Video Chat From Anywhere. Currently due to the restrictions associated with the WIFI-only limitations, FaceTime will soon be available outside of the home. Therefore, with the 4G network, video chat will become accessible anywhere, anytime with the iPhone 5.

2. Face Recognition Security. There has been several reports regarding Apple and the potential purchase of a Sweden-based tech firm specializing in facial recognition technologies and similar applications that are able to identify users based on their unique facial characteristics. The iPhone 5 may be utilizing facial recognition as an added security feature.

3. More Storage Space. 2009 was the last time that Apple increased the capacity of the iPhone. Therefore, iPhone 5 should have at least 64 GB of memory. The iPod touch is already at a 64 GB, which is usually a step behind the iPhone.

4. Dual Core Processor. The next generation iPhone will have dual core processors along with improved graphics, making for even better delivery of high res videos and photography.

5. Extended Battery Life. iPhone 5 will have about 14 hours of talk time on 3G and about 7 hours projected on 4G with a standby of 600 hours (twice the standby time of the iPhone 4).

Besides the famous iPhone 5 released, the another example of pervasive computing devices is iPad 2. With a lot of great features, such as:

1.      Thinner, lighter, and full of great ideas.

2.      Dual-core A5 chip. It’s fast, times two!

8.      Wi-Fi and 3G.Two great ways to stay connected.EveryiPad is built with advanced 802.11n wireless technology. It automatically finds Wi-Fi networks, which you can join with a few taps. iPad is also available with 3G connectivity on either AT&T or Verizon Wireless networks. So if you’re somewhere without Wi-Fi, such as outdoors on a camping trip or on the road, you can still surf the web, check email, or get directions.

9.       AirPrint. Print everything wirelessly.Print your email, photos, web pages, and documents right from your iPad over Wi-Fi. There’s no software to download, no drivers to install, and no cables to connect. 6.0 Conclusion

Today, most preschools and middle-class homes have a computer. Nikhil started at one, but today ten-month-old infants sit at the computer with mum or dad as part of the interactive parent-child programme at school.
